Picture of the Day for
As the weather clears up on our
fifth day at Ice Station Rodin and the temperature
warms to -15ºC, the teams spend more time on the ice collecting samples. The
dive team, though collecting data from their underwater transects, still have
not been able to find krill in direct association with the over-rafted ice.
They placed one meter ring drift nets in the water overnight to attempt to find
krill for growth experiments. Karina Johnston uses
the microscope to determine the length, sex, and growth stage of the adult E. superba (right picture) krill that
were caught overnight. The dive team also identified ctenophores, Medusa
jellyfish, fish larvae, amphipods, copepods, ostracods,
tomopterids, and of course larval and adult krill in
the tows (photos by Dan Costa and Kerry Claffey).
The ice team continues their work with the ice cores and optics studying all aspects of the ice biology and chemistry. The predator teams have been providing much needed assistance to all teams when needed in addition to compiling and organizing their data.
