A Short Note on the
Temperature Structure Across Drake Passage
E.E. Hofmann, O. Polyakov, J.M. Klinck, and R. C. Beardsley
This
note describes temperature distributions measured with XBT and XCTD probes
during the Drake Passage crossings made at the start and
end of each SO GLOBEC survey cruise. The
temperature distributions show variability in the location of the Polar Front
as well as rings and meanders associated with the Polar Front. The temperature sections also show the upper
1000-m water mass distribution across Drake Passage
which allows the development of the Winter Water layer to be described. The sections are compared to existing climatologies of temperature distribution across Drake
Passage.
